Please come out and watch the kids debate at a tournament or at practice after school. It enhances our learning process to have an audience.
We Need Volunteers!
Judge - Tournaments charge $125-200 for judge fees. When you volunteer for this role you will be a tremendous value to the team - please email solicel@lisd.net and we will provide training materials and videos so you know all you need to know, If you have previous experience with speech or debate competition you probably already know all that you need!
Host - Be the adult presence at a Team Fundraiser Night at a local restaurant. Many restaurants will donate a percentage of proceeds to school teams who arrange a fundraiser, but the kids need an adult to just sit at the location and be the contact person. This can be a huge support to the program.
Drive - Coordinate with other parents to ensure that all the team members have options for transportation to practice and late-night bus arrival. Offer behind-the-scenes support to other parents to take turns with late night or early morning pick ups and drop offs. Coordinate communication by calling or emailing other parents to arrange a pick up for a child who might need a ride.
Encourage- help your student to compete and earn awards through National Speech and Debate Association, an honor society for debaters. Every interscholastic debate win earns a student 6 points and every loss, 3. Every Speech round earns as well. This organization also recognizes Academic All-Americans. (See chart below.) Participation in this honor society can be a crowning achievement for a High School career.
